Beacon, NY: (Jun-16-07) Gerald McNair filed a civil lawsuit against the city of Beacon claiming he was beaten and pepper sprayed by Beacon police officers without justification. The suit, listing the city and Officers Christian Alencastro and Richard Sassi Jr. as defendants, alleged that McNair was pepper sprayed and beaten with a police baton during a traffic stop on February 3, 2002. It also claimed that after he was handcuffed, officers grabbed his head and banged his face into the sidewalk.
In a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay McNair $20,000 to resolve the police misconduct lawsuit. It is one of two cases alleging police brutality that have been settled by the city in the past six months. In January, the city and its insurance carrier paid $48,000 to Samuel Parker, who claimed he was punched in the face by police officers while he was handcuffed in the station house.
