BP to Pay $100 Million Settlement in Toxic Fumes Lawsuit
This is a settlement for the Personal Injury lawsuit.
Texas City, TX: Ten workers who filed suit against BP North American Inc, over allegations that the oil company had released toxic chemicals into the air around its refinery in Texas City have been awarded $100 million as settlement.
The plaintiffs are among dozens of employees who were treated for sore throats and dizziness associated with exposure to toxic chemicals in March and April 2009.
According to lawyers for the workers, BP's refinery had a poor safety record, and they cited a 2005 explosion that killed 15 people and injured 170, and they contended BP had failed to take adequate steps to remedy the problems.
Not surprisingly, BP denied the allegations. However, the jury found the oil and gas giant negligent, awarding each of the 10 plaintiffs $10 million in punitive damages, and between $5,000 and $244,000 per person for medical expenses, lost earnings and pain and suffering.
