It was International Women’s Day this past Monday and that got me thinking about how the event causes much joy and celebration in most western countries, but likely goes unnoticed in parts of the world that still allow female circumcision. Of all the personal injury lawsuits needed to be filed to protect women, female genital mutilation should surely get top billing. Hillary Clinton said, “Laws are still on the books denying women the right to own property, access credit, or make their own choices within their marriage. And honor killings, maiming, female genital mutilation, and other violent and degrading practices that target women are tolerated in too many places today.” But what about closer to home?
Drugs that are approved by the FDA are causing personal injury to American women. In fact, the Ortho Evra patch has caused many deaths. Many women I have personally interviewed can no longer have children: in a way, they too have been mutilated. When is the FDA going to protect women’s lives and get this dangerous drug off the market? We usually don’t know the adverse side effects of a drug until people report them and that sometimes means some people will die. The FDA reported that 21 women have died. It also hasn’t updated labeling since November, 2005.
Countless more women have suffered blood clots and stroke since then. I’m furious—I can’t imagine how women who have suffered can control their anger against the Ortho Evra Patch drug makers.
Great article Jane. Wish there were more people willing to stand up for us on the Ortho Evra Patch and the greedy corporations that push this stuff on us
How about this ladies…
Let's see more women at the helm of pharmaceutical companies. According to a senior female executive with Wyeth, less than 10 percent of the executives at 40 of the world's biggest drug companies are women. The number of women in senior jobs at drug companies increased slightly between 2004 and 2005 and then get this, declined in 2006.
Do you think that maybe, just maybe drug companies might worry a little more about little nasties like strokes and heart attacks if the people in charge were also the people that had to use the Ortho Patch, or Hormone Replacement Therapy Drugs or had to worry about possible birth defects from using Paxil or other SSRIs.
Or perhaps that is problem. Women would rather not be there because they'd have a hard time selling some of this stuff to the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.
I say let's put more girls in charge and see if some of those unwanted, even deadly side effects disappear.
Not that I'm impressed a lot, but this is more than I expected when I found a link on Furl telling that the info is awesome. Thanks.
Thank you for keeping everyone educated.
I agree with you 99% but wonder if you have really looked at the whole picture. DOn’t mean to be critical just food for thought.
It’s nice to read well written articles. I love to read on blogs managed by people that knows what they write 🙂 Greetings from Italy, i’m here for vacation in a wonderful Rimini hotel
Nice blog and thanks for the info!
