So American Eagle Outfitters has “agreed” to get rid of a rule they had that banned male employees from showing up to work in women’s clothes, and to be fair, women employees from showing up in men’s clothes.
For American Eagle Outfitters (AEO), the issue arose out of a complaint filed by Make the Road New York with NY State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s office that stated there was a “pattern of discrimination against transgender job hunters.”
According to the NY Daily News, a probe into the situation revealed that, indeed, there was such a pattern.
Of course, a spokeswoman from AEO has issued a statement indicating that “AEO is not admitting to the findings”.
Meanwhile, AEO has also agreed to train its staff on transgender issues such as how to refer to a transgender employee—is he a she or she a he? I’m not sure how one crafts the lingo on that in the company handbook other than to simply follow the wishes of the transgender employee. Bathroom assignments I guess are another issue, and one I’m not tackling here. None the less, it’ll now be addressed in AEO’s training.
But it begs the question, what about retailers like Hollister—who recently came under fire for allegedly dismissing an employee for another form of dress: a hijab. This isn’t a judgement statement here, but you’d have to agree that a head scarf is perhaps a little less visually in the raise-an-eyebrow range for most customers than a gentleman in hose and heels. I’m exaggerating here, but I’ve certainly come across a wide variability among cross-dressing styles.
So would a qualified gent in hose and heels get a job at Hollister?
I truly feel it's about time for us transgendered girls!! I am all for equal rights for all, and it always seems to be ok for real females to dress in any clothes that they want and for girls to play on boys sports teams and even be in the boy scouts these days. However, boys or T-Girls aren't allowed the same rights, not even close, we just get mocked. It does appear that I can shop at many stores now, either completely dressed as a girl or just partially dressed in like jeans pantyhose and heels with minimal makeup, more of the androgenous mode which I truly love too. Keep up the good work "girls"
Hi Tanya T, You go girl. Can’t say I know what it’s like to actually walk in your shoes (err, wait a minute–I can actually; and let me say that Manolo’s are not always all they’re cracked up to be after 5 hours on 3″ heels)–but I can imagine that not fitting into societal “norms” while trying to be true to yourself must be very difficult at times. Glad you’ve also found a happy medium in androgeny.
As an out and about T girl,I go everywhere in girl mode, including air travel. This is 2010 and the target customer group for AEO accepts us,why shouldn't the company itself? We take a lot more pride in our look than many others do in today's world.American Apparel stores have embraced the unisex idea and operate in an accepting way. We are here to stay!
Nothing wrong with the old transvestite look. I don't believe the AEO would take part in such discrimination anyway – i have a few relatives very close to the organisation. They're terrific people.
Lets face it, the old rule was by far stupid. Me as a tranny lover, would love to see more acceptence all over the world for both transgendered people and crossdressers/transvestites. Most my friends are either transgendered or transvestite. or guys really into them. We all agreed on one thing, that rule was discrimination to the max and shouldnt be allowed at all. period.
