I'm a firm believer in keeping things simple. That way Murphy's Law is less likely to strike. I would think a large cone or funnel, upside down over the rupture, with a large enough diameter pipe, as to not restrict the flow, leading up to the surface. This could be lowered slowly over the top to at least contain most of the plume. Once water/oil is pumped out and separated, it can be lowered to the ocean floor and anchored. Once the pressure has been bled off, a permanent fix can be incorporated.

It's hard to come up with the right fix without knowing the full parameters of the problem.. how much pressure we are dealing with and how long of straight pipe we have in place to work with. my proposal is to cap the pipe in steps. as an example if the inner diameter of the current pipe is 24 centimeters. slip another pipe inside this pipe which has an external diameter of just a hair less than the current pipe. The longer the inserted pipe, the better as the length of this pipe will help distribute the pressure of the oil along a larger surface tension between the first and second pipe. once in place.. drill a couple of holes through the two pipes and use a metal type of dowel or pin maybe an inch or two thick as appropriate based on the pressure involved. to hold the two pipes fixed together.. repeat the process until the overall thickness of each of the nesting pipes has reduced or eliminated the flow from the original pipe. this should work as you are never tackling the entire pressure of the well all at once and you are gradually blocking the pipe much like clogging an artery with plaque . Please forward this idea to the engineers at BP if possible. If this idea is seen as viable which I think it is, I would like to be involved in some way in seeing the idea come to life. thank-you.
