According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Safe Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) for mercury is 0.1 micrograms per kilogram of body weight. It is my understanding that this "guideline" was established based on reactions observed in adults, who were occupationally exposed to methyl mercury through ingestion and/or inhalation.

Since a single, mercury containing flu vaccine contains a minimum of 25 micrograms ethyl mercury, a 25 pound (11.4 kg) baby receiving a "single" flu shot will receive ~ 22 times what the EPA has established as a safe TDI. Couple this with the fact babies do not have fully developed nervous systems or blood-brain barriers, the mercury they’re receiving is ethyl… not methyl, and the mercury is being injected directly into their blood streams (..as a point of comparison, poison from venomous snakes is generally harmless if ingested… it’s has to get in the blood steam to be dangerous), and it’s unclear how even a single flu shot can be considered safe.

100,000 fu shots will result in a minimum injection of 2.5 grams of mercury, well inside the range of what’s considered to be a lethal ingested, adult dosage. So not only is Paul Offit's statement wrong, it’s an incredibly callous thing to even suggest. It's unfortunate there’s no law against being stupid, because it’s hard to find a better description for the brand of vaccine “advice” that comes form Paul Offitt’s mouth. The guy’s an idiot… no check that, he's an incredibly dangerous idiot.

Oh man…that is scary. Didn't know kids were staying in hospitals BECAUSE of the shot.

  • Infant Hospital July 9, 2009 at 10:54 pm

Many parents fear the thought of admitting their child to hospital due to some unforeseen mishaps. But one should take it in a positive way rather than fearing. Mishaps won't happen, if proper care taken like, One must go with the child to the hospital, Should also take their toys to hospital, try to spend more time with child at hospital, tell him stories, buy a toy stethoscope and practise being a doctor etc. To get more tips on how to take good care, refer http://www.zippy-health.com/making-infant-hospita

Could you please let me know the source of the studay? Who was it conducted by? How do we know they are reputable? I would like to pass the information on but need to know it is substantial. Thanks

Hi Melody, Thanks for your comment. Absolutely can give you the source–this link will give you the press release on the information, with the abstract and authors of the study listed towards the end. I hope this helps, -Abi

I've just finished reading the press release and think that it does not really warrant the conclusions and insinuations made above. The critical elements of the press release are that children who were likely to be vaccinated had "three times the risk of hospitalization". With a sample size of 263, it could be that 1 non vaccinated child went to the hospital and 3 vaccinated children went. There is no mention that this 3x times increase in risk is statistically significant, so my guess is that the actual numbers are very small like in my example. There are many potential confounds that cannot be assessed with just the information in the press release. Furthermore, even if the research was iron-clad, it is still only one study, with a relatively small sample size, in a sea of larger studies that have consistently shown the safety and health benefits of modern vaccines.

Although I detest responding to people who don't even identify themselves by their real names, I will just say that a study of 8 consecutive years at the same facility would be good enough evidence that the results were reliable for the average person.

I would also refer the vaccine apologist to the many studies that say flu vaccines are basically useless. Most are discussed in a 6-part series I recently wrote titled, Profit Driven Swine Flu Propagand – Pump Up the Volume," which can be found online with a google search of the title.

And this isn't skewed by the children who get the flu injection being the ones for whom flu is a bigger health risk, due to underlying conditions. No… …

Hi James, Thanks for your comment; and yes, that could be the case. However, if you live in a place like where I'm at, and flu shots are mandated up to a certain age, well then, the risk becomes a moot point…
