I experience side effects from both Levaquin and Avelox. Recently, I was prescribed Avelox for a sinus infection. Within an hour after taking the med, I experienced a severe sore throat, the back of my tongue was paining really bad;my tongue actually was swollen; it was difficult to eat, my lips and face were swollen. I am currently experiencing what I would describe as nervous muscle tension. Upon reading more on these antibiotics, it was stated that the side effects could last weeks to month. The physician was called and although he knew that I could not take Levaquin; he gave me sample boxes of the Avelox. I am still not certain how long these side effects will last, but it’s been almost one week as of now. I was instructed to take Benadryl; what I should have done was go to the emergency room. I makes you wonder why doctors still prescribe these antibiotics when they know they are in the same family and has caused so may bad side effects for people.

I took avalox and now have damage to My CNS and A small tear in a tendon in My left hip and I twitch all the time My face leg's and arm's eye's So I do not know what to say other than I pray You all Never have what happend to Me Happen to You I am told I have nerve damage.That it may take years to get better if it ever will.My bad day's I cannot begin to say how they are I am now on Clonozapam To help with the Twitching.Burning in My hands and feet. If Anyone else has had this happen to them please post.

I had taken Avelox a couple of weeks ago and within 20 mins. had a severe allergic reaction which caused to have a seizure. I was rushed to the ER but almost died. I almost flatlined. My entire body turned red but the palms of my hands were so itchy, my lips swelled and I couldn't breathe….

on April 2,2013 I took one sample Avelox. Please keep in mind I have been tking this antibiotic for sinus infections etc…since it first came out. Unfortunetley this ONE time 4-02-13 I reacted almost immediately after taking one tab. Started with itchy, swollen hands. weak legs and arm function. Nausea, severe stomach cramps,projectile vomiting, respitory distress, tachycardia, anyphylactic shock. EMT's did NOT know what Avelox was. That scared me. No one thought about looking it up on smart phones and their were at least 6 EMT's/Paramedics. TMH hospital discharge papers stated…patient diagnosis :allergic reaction to Avelox and protocol…continue Avelox. MORE scarey. I am grateful that I am in medical field and educated on what to do. BUT any other person….well. not good folks. I am still hypersensitive to cats now & God knows what else.I have metalic taste in mouth. It has been 9 days I am still not 100% back to stable. Please take meds with caution. ALWAYS have Benydrl in case…..Good luck.

I lost my husband six hours after taking only one avelox for a sinus infection. His tongue and throat swelled and his heart had to be restarted with epinephrine. I also beleave he had renal failure as well, because he came out of the BR. and said something was'nt right here. He sat on our bed could'nt give himself a breathing treatment and so he then laid down on slowly and his eyes were fixed and his lips had turned blue. I started CPR. on him until help arrived. The sheriffs arrived first but just to make sure it was safe for the EMTS to enter. They came in and took over giving him CPR. got a pulse and then rushed him to the ER. in REDLANDS CA. They worked on him for an hour and a half until my husband sqeezed my hand letting me know he had enough. The Dr. of coarse is admitting no wrong doing because he has attorneys backing him up. The reason people are prescribed Avelox or Levaquin is because they may be ALLEGIC to other antibiotics as I was. I took the others for years when i got ill but became acutely allergic to many antibiotics so my doctor prescribed Avelox and Levaquin and I now have a partially torn rotator cuff tendon and other shoulder burning pains and cannot ever remember hurting my shoulder in any way. I had chronic bronchitis and the drug worked but may have ruined my shoulders and who knows what else. I have problems in my right foot also but left is fine.

If you don’t want side effects, don’t take drugs. At the slightest sign of infection we go to our doctor, and they are generally happy to prescribe, pills. 9 out of 10 times our body could fight the infection without anything – and not only get better, but be better off for it. But instead we can’t wait to take these magical pills that we expect to make us better and do no harm.

Antibiotics and especially flouroquinolones are supposed to be among the last line of defense. They were never intended to be a “try this and maybe you will feel better” drug.

There are people who these drugs actually save. As in, without these drugs, those people would have either died or required an uncertain surgery. These people would happily suffer a tendon rupture, sore throat, or almost any other of the symptoms cited in this thread. These are the people for whom these drugs were intended.

People – if we abuse these drugs, we lose critical medicine that saves lives and may end up doing more harm than good. I’m talking to the patients, the doctors and to the pharmaceuticals here. Let’s use these drugs, and all drugs, for their intended purpose and reserve them for the life threatening conditions they were originally intended for.

I have a bad lung infection i saw a gp and he put me on moxifloxacin he never asked me what medication i was taking eg predisolone i tokk it for 7 days now the tendon in on the right leg has 2 lumps and very sore will it clear up
