Racial discrimination is something we’ve come to associate with minority groups—it’s rare that you see an item in the press about a non-minority being the victim of such discrimination, outside of say the occasional affirmative action case related to college admissions.
But, what if someone from the majority is actually part of the minority in a work situation? That’s what happened in a recent court case involving the city of Los Angeles.
In James Duffy v. City of Los Angeles, Duffy, a 63-year old Caucasian man who’d been working for the City’s Department of Recreation and Parks as a gardener for 19 years, alleged racial discrimination against his Hispanic foreman and coworkers. According to court documents, Duffy’s foreman, Abel Perez, allegedly began discriminating against Duffy upon becoming his foreman back in 2004.
Duffy claimed he was forced to retire after several discriminatory events took place—including some harassing incidents that happened after Duffy had suffered an on-the-job head injury, resulting in short-term memory problems. According to the filing, Duffy stated he’d complained to his supervisors several times but to no avail.
Some of the alleged discriminatory actions included Perez once stating “I hate white people.” Perez would also allegedly tell Duffy he hadn’t been given certain assignments when he had or that he failed to complete assignments he had never actually been given.
The complaint also stated the city of Los Angeles engaged in intentional racial discrimination by maintaining a “systematic and continuous policy and goal of firing and demoting Caucasian employees”—and that the city took no action after Duffy had made numerous complaints about the harassment he was enduring.
The case, James Duffy v. City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Superior Court, Central , BC454369, went before a jury and a verdict was returned in favor of Duffy. The $3,255,000 verdict was unanimous on claims of disability and racial harassment, retaliation and discrimination by the City of Los Angeles and three of Duffy’s supervisors. The verdict comprised $380,000 in economic damages and $2,875,000 in non-economic damages.
In Ca. white people are the minority in Ca.

It's amazing how white males benefit from reverse discrimination, but black females never benefit when discrimination is brought up. We are considered militant, insubordinate and told to suck it up if you don't like it. We get no sympathy or litigation support.
What’s “amazing” is just how long it is taking for most to realize the majority of Americans are minorities.
And how sad it is that schools no longer teach Aesop’s tale of the goose and the golden egg: the class will be long and painful when society learns this simple precept by experience.
Oh, so you know how it feels to be a woman. Apparently you know a bit about being treated differently too, welcome to white male territory! We also "are considered militant, insubordinate and told to suck it up if you don't like it. We get no sympathy or litigation support. "
Of course you got -3 points but now -2 since my 1 thumbs up. Whenever anybody Black – ESPECIALLY a Black woman attempts to bring charges against a White attacker she can expect one of four responses, but ALL ending in the same result: 1. They can't find who did it ('cuz they're not TRYING to find him: 2. There's not enough evidence to convict when you point your attacker out: 3: If you're hollaring and screaming that that's who did it – then you get accused of "doing it to yourself": And 4. If you have witnesses, video taped evidence, and undeniable PROOF of an attack – they just don't act…the system just plain and simply doesn't act against him, i.e. NO arrest, NO bringing in for questioning. To all who are being charged with this bogus "Reverse Discrimination" nonsense that they MADE UP – folks, they're mocking you; they KNOW they're mocking you. But don't despair…there is One Who is NOT mocked. They'll get theirs. Trust me.
Apply for a job at the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks as a gardener and your luck may change.
Yeah. I know. And don’t try to find representation…. it just isn’t going to happen. And as far as the job goes… if they don’t find a way to make your work look bad, even if it was excellent before the complaint took place, they’ll make your life on the job a living hell. So if you don’t suck it up and take it because… “Discrimination doesn’t exist anymore” … then they will either see that you get fired or you quit. … or in some of our cases, retire early… on disability.
It is amazing how black people readily bring up race. Race this and race that. Find someone that will help you. Ask for references from family and friends. Don't give up and don't use race unless it is the cause of the problem, not because white males did this or did that.
Absolutely insane. This redneck knows nothing about discrimination…
The discrimination euphemistically known as "affirmative action" is routine throughout academia and government. It not only shafts the discrimination victims, but the public also. It shafts the public because instead of the public being served by the best possible government workers, the government workers are frequently substandard trash who got the jobs because of their skin color.
In 2008 I was told by my boss which was the CEO of the company that I was the wrong color for my job. Since the majority of the co. was black I guess. This led to me losing my job and the union wouldn't do anything about it. Also ran by blacks. Oh by the way I was a city transit driver with a clean driving record. Two white union stewards were also fired when my Wife took grievance papers in and they accepted them. To this day I am still having problems. I lost my home because of it.
unfortunately caucasians have become the minority ,our country is filled with people from every other country in the world. I don't discriminate against anyone unless they're in here illegelly & are making trouble or forming gangs. We welcome all people who want to take advantage of the opportunies that we have to offer but remember America is the ONLY country you can go to and become an american, no one can go to England and become English, you can't go to Italy and become Italian, etc. all we ask for is to be respected & treated fairly. I've seen more foriengers come here and whine about this and that and I KNOW it's better here than anywhere else in the world. America is Blessed and welcomes ALL people, even those who don't like us. Skin is just a "color", there mentality is the problem.
City of LA is controlled by latino workers all day long and they will discriminate against every non-latino worker…Downtown is affirmative action and fair when you're first hired, but once you are actually on the job you're fucked. I've been playing dumb and stupid for the past 28 years and I have outsmarted all of them. 🙂
City of LA rec & parks is controlled by latino workers..and they will discriminate against every non-latino worker. Downtown is affirmative & fair to everyone when you apply and get the job, but its a whole different ball game when you're actually working on the fields. I know cuz I've been doing it close to 28 years, playing dumb for the thrill of it and I will survive. Thank u Gloria. 🙂
3 and a quarter million dollars lost by the city of LA , and still this Abel guy works as a foreman for city of LA rec & parks..that's corrupted!
