Propecia Lawsuit

Both in the US and in Canada, Propecia lawsuit s—or Proscar lawsuits have been filed. The Canada Proscar lawsuit alleges sexual dysfunction and was filed in British Columbia.



In the US, a lawsuit filed against Merck & Co. on behalf of men who have taken Propecia, also marketed under the brand name Proscar, alleges the medication has serious side effects including a risk of sexual dysfunction and mental and emotional difficulties. Furthermore, the lawsuit alleges, Merck failed to adequately warn users about those serious side effects, even after regulators in Europe demanded a stronger warning label, highlighting the risks of the drug.

A lawyer for the plaintiffs argues that Propecia's side effects, including sexual dysfunction, anxiety and insomnia, have a devastating impact on the men who used the medication. The lawyer also alleges that, contrary to Merck's claims, those side effects remain years after the men stop using the medication. Some men further allege they experienced difficulty breathing, loss of concentration and loss of memory.

Merck responded to the lawsuit saying that it would vigorously defend itself (as quoted in The Hartford Courant; 03/03/11).

Propecia FDA Warning

In June 2011 the FDA issued a warning that Propecia is linked to an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer. That warning was based on a study involving Avodart and Proscar. Propecia has one-fifth the active ingredient as Proscar, leading the FDA to determine that Propecia should carry the same warning about the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. High-grade prostate cancer is a rare but more aggressive cancer than low-grade prostate cancer.

In July 2011, the FDA announced it was updating the Warnings and Precautions sections of Proscar labeling to reflect that patients could experience a reduced serum PSA concentration of approximately 50 percent within six months of beginning treatment. Furthermore, men aged 55 and older had an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer and Proscar may decrease serum PSA in patients who have prostate cancer.

Propecia Side Effects

propeciamalesideeffects Meanwhile, a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine suggests that men who use Propecia may experience serious side effects including loss of libido and erectile dysfunction. The study examined medications that are used to treat problems linked to an enlarged prostate and that can also treat hair loss. Among those medications is Propecia. Researchers said men who take Propecia and similar drugs for hair loss or for urinary tract infections must use extreme caution because of the side effects, which can also include the development of breast tissue, or gynecomastia.

The review study, conducted by researchers at Boston University School of Medicine who examined data from clinical trials, found that 15 percent of men who used Propecia experienced sexual dysfunction including decreased libido and erectile dysfunction. That is compared to 7 percent of men who took a placebo and experienced sexual dysfunction. The clinical trials used in the review study examined patients who used Propecia for hair loss and those who used Propecia to treat an enlarged prostate.

Washington, DC: When finasteride (Proscar) was first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) in 1992, researchers found higher incidents of sexual dysfunction in study participants taking finasteride when compared against a control group taking a placebo. Two dosages were studied: 5mg, and 1mg. The VA is feeding this drug like candy with no screening and its urologists stating its a 100% safe drug and that all the adverse side effects of finasterdie go away once you cease the drug and also stating in writing as well that there are no specialists for post finasteride syndrome. We have this in writing from a urologist at the VA and his chief of staff also has approved such and the VA refuses to acknowledge nor recognize nor treat or even recognize evaluations from DR Irwig and DR Allen Jacibs/Ann Ganzer etc. Privately they have told me that the research is all bogus and that these top researchers are bogus while they kill my fellow veterans suffering devastating effects from the drug and refuse to give them treatment with veterans suffering from sever depression sucidal ideation memory loss, etc This is while the VA doctors and administrators all claim this symptomology is all due to enlarged prostates and the veterans PTSD, Bi Pola, Depression or mental health disability kept in check for years . Further hormone blood testing results after taking finasterdie are all due to enlarged prostate or that the veteran had hormonal problems prior to taking finasteride.

WE veterans are being and have been given finasteride 5mg for enlarged prostate by the VA like candy and have lied about it having any side effects while VA doctors urologists psychiatrists primary doctors claim to us its a 100% safe drug and blame it all on enlarged prostate and a veterans mental state or PTSD etc etc

I was on it for five years, when there were no warnings.
These guys taking this pill after they put the warnings out there are f*cking idiots.
Not in a million f*cking years would i have ever even considered taking this drug knowing the side effects it has.
Im living in a night mare now suffering from all these side effects cause merk lied about the drug.

I have taken this 5 mg Tablet with 0.4 mg Flomax for a year and feel DEAD below the waist and NEVER even want to think about sex!!!!!!

IF your a veteran given finasteride by negligent incompetent urologist or doctors at the veterans administration or if you were one of the veteran guinea pigs the VA experimented on with finasteride in 2007-2009 VA Durham NC research study with no follow up given and developed memory loss. loss of sexual interest and desire , impotence , suidcial thoughts, hair loss upon stopping, sleep problems, shrinkage of the testicles and penis, enlarged breast, sever depression, etc contact me The VA urologists are telling vets lies that finasterdie is 100% safe with no side effects while they tell lies that these side effects are all from "enlarged prostate " Firther once you get impotent the VA urologist will try ciallus or viagra but worn even do a hormonal blood tests . I started taking propecia, back in 2010 and was told if I didn't feel any side effects in the first couple weeks I was in the clear. After taking it for about a year, I noticed side effects effecting my sex life and aching in my testicles. I also noticed that my penis seems to have shrunk a little. Which has really effected my life. My confidence with women and depression. I feel I was lied to and what has happened to me isn't right. I am a 42 year old single guy and it is hard enough meeting women but to find one to understand this is going to be twice as hard. When I first took the drug, I did my research on the internet and found no information saying that if you had side effects they would last after quitting the drug. I have been off of it for some time now and nothing has changed. Obviously I lost all the hair I had grown in but I never thought that it would ruin my life like this. I have tried to find ways to help but how do you add size to your genitals. Obviously some men are more endowed then others and I am not one of the lucky ones. So the last thing I needed was this.

i have taken propecia since around 1993 1995 i developed depression and anxiety lost my company stated doing drugs went on ssi 2000 for 4 years no insurance i lost everything i owned still took propecia when i could afford it iwas very vane about my hair and still am went back on ssi 2013 taking meds for depression anxietyihavent had sex in 5 yearsi juststopped taking propecia 1 month ago heip please i have lost everthing

I have been taking Finasteride for several years for enlarging prostate. I had taken Propecia to jumpstart hair regrowth after having basal cell cancer surgery on top of my head and frontal/top hair shaven to perform this. I noticed that it helped with sleeping as I would urinate less at night. I learned that Finasteride was the same in a larger dose. I had a test to verify my prostate was enlarging and my physician decided to get me on Finasteride. My semen is watery and almost non existent. A year ago, my right breast started feeling sensitive. I thought I had bumped it, but while doing some research, I saw that there was some findings that there my be some breast tenderness side effects, but not enlarging at that time of reading. I stayed off for a month and the tenderness went away. I was going through some steroid injection therapy for chronic pain in my lower back. After several treatments, I was seeing great hair loss (this was not mentioned initially by the anesthesiologist). I started taking the Finasteride again at a lower dose (2-5mg) daily. After a few months, my hair started looking fuller again...but a couple more months into it and now my right breast is tender and definitely enlarged. Left is also, but right is more so. I have had brain fog all along. I have constantly complained to my physicians (including a neurosurgeon, ENT specialist, a neurologist and my GP. I even went to the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville to seek wellness all over, but never actually got a specific doctor that was a total diagnostician. Just bumped from department to department. This has been going on for four years and longer all together. The Mayo advised me to get off pain meds which I have with injection substitution which had it's own world of side effects, but nothing like the hang-over feeling of narcotic pills. I only use these on rare occasions when pain is intolerable on one of the really bad days. Mostly pain pill free as far as pain meds. So, brain fog, loss in sex drive and male breasts. This is what I have experienced with Finasteride. My sex life with my lovely wife has all but halted in the past several years. I am 59 years old and extremely healthy, 170 lbs and 6' tall. I will say that I didn't go bald and sleep was better, but now I'm off the drug Finasteride again for the past couple of weeks and frequent all night urination is back for me and the hair shedding is starting to return. This is my unfortunate story.

Sexual dysfunction but my urologist was treating me for an enlarged prostate. When I complained about sexual dysfunction, my primary care doctor and then my urologist prescribed testosterone by patch and injections. Then when that did not help, I used a suction device that was humiliating and gave me no sexual satisfaction to neither me or my wife. My wife and I are only 59 and have not had sex for over five years. Nothing's been said about Propecia as being the cause and I am still taking this medication. I am upset as I feel I have been duped by my doctors. I would like some satisfaction.

I took Propecia from 1998-2002. I developed erectile dysfunction, penis shrinkage, internal penile scarring, panic attacks, chronic migraines, depression and IBS.

My short term memory has been affected. It is hard for me to remember ideas and concepts that were just presented to me. It makes it difficult for me perform my job. I must write a lot of things down so I don't forget. I also tend to forget what bills I paid or where I put my car keys. My memory has improved a bit since I stopped propecia but it's not like it used to be.

I was diagnosed with hypogonadism 1 year ago. I am on bi monthly injections of testosterone. I have fought depression, loss of libido, severe depression and most severly cognitive changes that have effected my medical practice. I am an emergency room physician associate and finding my memory has deteriorated significantly. I am concerned that I may no longer be able to practice and I am only 45 years old.

Complete loss of libido, loss of feeling in penis/scrotum, significant loss of erection ability. Loss of cognitive function (as an engineer, this was particularly challenging) and memory. Anxiety and loss of energy also accompanied my time using propecia/finasteride.

I took Propecia for 2 months. It has caused most of my hair to fall out and it now appears that I have developed Alopecia Areata as diagnosed by my dermatologist. I have no leg or arm hair, my eye brows are almost gone and I large bald spots on my entire head, especially the sides.

I have had erectile dysfunction, loss of penile feeling, loss of sexual thoughts/libido, testicular shrinkage, penile shrinkage, cognitive impairment, memory loss, muscle loss, body composition changes... Propecia completely screwed up my endocrine system and has had a massive physical, hormonal psychological and relational impact on my life. I've been through a long journey and have been able to rebuild myself, but I've had to pay tens of thousands out of my own pocket in medical expenses. I don't want anyone to have to go through this nightmare.

Low testosterone level as a result of taking Propecia. I am on TRT for the rest of my life because of it. Also, I am taking xanax for the anxiety attacks this medicine has caused. I had been off Propecia for over a year before I came to the realization that my side effects were not going to go away. This medicine has greater side effects than what I was led to believe by the physician who prescribed it for me. I have seen a GP, Endo and neurologist because of Propecia.

Took propecia for 3 years (2004-2007). Lost morning erections and libido in June 2007, so stopped propecia. But now 13 months later, still unable to be stimulated sexually. Semen is very watery and much lower volume. This is not psychological.

Now I feel passive and have difficulty enjoying things in life in general. Now very concerned about having a fulfilling sexual relationship. These feelings have not caused my sexual dysfunction. Rather, sexual dysfunction has caused these feelings.

I accepted Propecia treatment to improve the thickness of my hair based on information corroborated by Merck and my doctor that side effects are extremely rare and not permanent, however, that has proven to not be the case. The effects of Propecia have left me mentally impaired, physically weak and sexually dysfunctional, profoundly stripping me of my quality of life.

Had I, among many, been truthfully informed that Propecia inhibits production of other significant hormones besides DHT - especially brain hormones - and can have possibly permanent effects and damages, I would have never taken it.

The worst aspect of this horrific ordeal is that while Propecia proveably has these sort of negative effects, doctors have next to no knowledge of why this occurs and how to treat it, and apparently, Merck is just as ignorant. This has left a vast number of victims in horrible health and proves the company's negligence.

It is time for them to learn that Propecia can be very, very harmful to health, and until this issue is resolved, for them to re-evaluate their dangerous drug and notify consumers about its side effects accurately.

I have sufferred the following side effects from Propecia:

Loss of Libido

Ability to achieve an erection

Brain Fog

These side effects, particularly the first two, are devastating to someone who is as young as myself (20 year old male). I feel like I am dead below the waist, and will never be able to have a significant relationship with a member of the opposite sex ever again. A lawsuit should be filed against Merck because they claimed that the side effects were not permanent, which has proven untrue in many cases. I have been off of the drug for 2 weeks without even the slightest hint of recovering. I had always been extremely "horny", but the drug has left me completely and utterly impotent.
