A New Jersey engineering and construction firm has been ordered to pay $5.2 million in an asbestos exposure case. The jury, in Los Angeles, concluded that the company acted with malice. The money goes to the survivors of a career naval machinist who died in 2006 after contracting mesothelioma, which comes from asbestos exposure.

A 52-year-old secretary was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma on April 17, 2006. Her asbestos exposure came from her husband's clothing, a drywaller on job sites in southern California. Her mesothelioma lawsuit was filed in Los Angles County, California in May 2006 and was settled eight months later for about $4.5 million.

In February 2005, a jury in Los Angeles awarded $34 million in damages to a 60-year-old Navy veteran, carpenter and maintenance man who contracted pleural mesothelioma in September 2003. The mesothelioma victim was exposed to asbestos products and machinery from 1965 to 1972 while serving in the U.S. Navy. He later worked as a machinist, finish carpenter and contractor.

In June 2006, a jury awarded $12.6 million in a mesothelioma lawsuit filed by the lawyer of a home repairman. The court in Los Angeles County broke down the award into $12 million for pain and suffering, and $600,000 for medical expenses. After a 13-day trial, the jury deliberated for nearly two days in coming to its verdict.

A 67-year-old retired computer engineer was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in May 2003. He had been exposed to asbestos from various products while working in Michigan, among other places. His mesothelioma lawsuit, filed in Illinois in August 2003, was resolved in May 2004. The total settlements came to $4.24 million.
