Sergeant Mark Rich of the Wildlife Resources Commission stated that the couple was heading toward the Albemarle Sound in a 19-foot Carolina skiff at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Sunday when the boat allegedly "took a hard turn."
The turn ejected the couple out of the boat.
Rich added that as the couple treaded water, their boat continued to turn in tight circles near them and that drugs and alcohol were not involved in the boat accident. The sergeant did not offer any details of what happened to the boat.
Marie Lassiter reportedly died on Sunday at the Albemarle Health hospital in Elizabeth City.
