Researchers examine Chantix side effects

Silver Spring, MDReports of Chantix side effects, such as suicide and aggression, spurred researchers in the UK to examine the anti-smoking aide to determine the extent of the product's side effects.

In the end, the researchers were unable to determine a viable link of adverse Chantix side effects.

Earlier this year, the FDA issued an order that a Chantix warning was required for the smoking cessation product to inform the public about being alert for signs of suicidal thoughts, hostility and depressed moods in those using the product.

According to the FDA, 98 suicides and 188 suicide attempts have been reported among people on Chantix since the drug was approved for distribution in the U.S. in 2006.

Other reports have stated that some patients experienced drowsiness that affected their ability to drive or operate heavy machinery.

In terms of mood changes and suicidal thoughts, it has been reported that the Chantix side effects can occur within days to weeks of the initial treatment.
