Chattanooga, TNIn a move that could greatly impact the future of disability claims, a new study from Keele University claims that more than a quarter of general practitioners (GPs) and physiotherapists believe that disability and pain are the result of physical problems, directly contradictiing the biopsychosocial practices of groups like Unum disability insurance.

Health Insurance Magazine, the study found that GPs tended to reject the idea that pain and disability are rooted in social and psychological factors when recommending that patients refrain from returning to the work place. The author suggests the results of the study may be linked to another recent study of the potential threat that GPs' diagnoses pose to the doctor-patient relationships.
Unum has been accused of wrongfully denying long-term coverage to a wealth of subscribers internationally, and has begun reexamining claims rejected since the beginning of 2000 as the result of a recent settlement.
The largest disability insurer in the world, Unum provides health benefits for more than 25 million people worldwide.
