Warning Labels Expand to Include Denture Adhesive Zinc Poisoning Risks

. By
Los Angeles, CAConsumer advocates report that the makers of a prominent denture cream have added the risk of denture adhesive zinc poisoning to the warning labels adorning the packaging of their oral adherent products.

span itemprop="image" itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject" style="display:block">In addition to small written warnings on containers or popular denture adhesives like Fixodent, manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline has announced plans to include an insert in all packages of their dental products detailing the item's zinc content and the risks inherent in excessive zinc exposure, according to ConsumerAffairs.com.

Several lawsuits have been filed alleging that the usage of denture creams is linked to zinc poisoning, a debilitating condition that can lead to anemia, pancreatic diseases and decreased levels of the beneficial high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

In 2008, medical journal Neurology published an article about four patients whose use of denture cream led to the nerve disorder neuropathy, resulting in motor and sensory deficiencies that included weakness in the limbs, loss of equilibrium and incontinence.

The insert packaged with the cream advises users of the product currently taking Zinc supplements to consult their physician, and recommends using the product no more than once a day.
