Infant Teething Tablets Containing Belladonna Recalled

Washington, DCHyland's Teething Tablets are being recalled after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received reports of "serious adverse events in children taking this product." The teething tablets contain varying amounts of belladonna, which is a potentially toxic ingredient. In addition, the FDA has received reports of children who consumed more tablets than recommended, because the containers do not have child resistant caps.

The FDA reports are consistent with belladonna toxicity. Belladonna can be used as a remedy, but if too much is consumed, it becomes a dangerous poison. Classic signs of Belladonna toxicity include fast heart rate, increased body temperature, dry skin and dry mouth, skin flushing, constipation, decreased urination, agitation, disorientation, hallucinations, and dilated pupils. Drowsiness may also be seen in infants.
