Chemical Companies a danger to Dallas Schools and Homes

Hundreds of Dallas residents are at risk for serious health problems from as a result of living near the Petra Chemical Company's facility that manufactures chlorine bleach.

The company recently filed a 'worst case scenario' with the federal Environmental Protection Agency, which stated that particles of chlorine could spread as far as 14 miles from the facility, to the neighborhoods of Grapevine, Garland, and Plano, putting as many as 2.3 million people at risk for death or serious injury. Currently, only ditch and a chain link fence separates the workers from the 90-ton rail tanker that contains the lethal ingredients used to make the bleach.

But this is not the only faciltiy to pose a threat to Dallas residents. Because of outdated zoning in the county, homes and schools have been built within streets, or in some cases in the same street as facilities that manufacture toxic chemicals.
