Heparin Coated Stents Pulled By Medtronic
Medtronic announced today that they are recalling some of their stents used in heart surgery, as they are coated with contaminated heparin. The contaminated blood thinner has to-date been associated with the deaths of 81 people.
A spokesperson for Medtronic said that the products included in the recall are the blood oxygenators and tubing packs. The coating is called Carmeda BioActive.
To-date, Medtronic has not received any reports of adverse events related to the use of these devices, and as the amount of heparin used is very small, it's not clear whether it would actually cause any adverse affects.Nevertheless, the company is not prepared to take any chances.
