Ambien Side Effects
Ambien is a pharmaceutical prescribed to help patients with insomnia and is currently one of the most prescribed sleep aids in the US. However, there is recent concern over possible addictive Ambien side effects and sleep-related eating, walking, cooking and driving. Alleged side effects range from Ambien sleepwalking episodes to hallucinations, violent outbursts and driving while asleep. There are in increasing number or reports of people have woken up to find themselves in jail, driving cars while in a hypnotic state and binge eating.
Ambien is a powerful sleeping aid drug. Scientific research confirms that Ambien is a powerful hypnotic that can induce sleepwalking and sleep-eating. Another possible side effect is that users of this drug have no memory of their actions after taking the drug.
Ambien is designed for short term treatment of insomnia unless otherwise advised by a doctor. Users of Ambien have complained of dependency on the drug to sleep with prolonged use. Possible unintentional overdose has caused death.
Federal health officials warned that all prescription sleeping pills may sometimes cause sleep-driving. People taking such drugs as Ambien have reported getting up in the middle of the night and going for a drive, with no recollection of doing so. The Food and Drug Administration has ordered 13 drug markers to to include warnings on their labels about rare but serious side effects including, sleep driving and life-threatening allergic reactions. (Mar-14-07) [CNN NEWS]
In November 2012, a study conducted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN found that hospitalized patients who were administered Ambien as a sleep aid had a greater risk of falling in the hospital than those patients who were not given the drug. The study was published in The Journal of Hospital Medicine (11/19/12). As a result of the study, the Mayo Clinic decided to phase out in-patient use of Ambien and seek other sleep aid alternatives. The study, while finding an association between Ambien use and falls, did not establish a cause and effect relationship between the two.

May 15, 2013
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved label changes specifying new dosing recommendations for zolpidem products (Ambien, Ambien CR, and Edluar), which are widely prescribed sleep medications. In a statement issued Tuesday, the FDA stated it has approved these changes because of the known risk of next-morning impairment with these drugs. READ MORE

I realized very early on that I was becoming addicted but was repeatedly assured that all of the horrible side effects would go away with time. They do not! The side effects actually just multiply rapidly and the constant solution seemed to be another drug to make them bearable. I can personally attest to most all of the experiences that others have had and many more on a much deeper level. I cannot express how much this wolf of a drug negatively affects nearly every aspect of your life dressed as a cute little sheep to count over a fence. That kind of sleep is NOT worth it! My heart goes out to EVERYONE who fell victim to this stuff.

I still have a disability. I can or straighten my leg completely. I suffer with the pain evry day. I can't stand for long periods nor can I sit for long periods with out it locking up and causing me such pain. I guess I'm greatfull I don't remember the actual accident. However I do remember every second after I woke up in hospital. It was the works pain I'd ever felt not to mention the stress Nd anxiety. I have a daughter who was 2 1/2 years old at the time. Im a single mother so it was most difficult to care for her and go through this.

I have seen many doctors since then, even an eating disorder specialist and none of them can help me. I am now technically obese, despite diets, despite exercise. I am heading for diabetes if this continues. I feel helpless.

I also had a very unusual experience a week ago where I got up out of bed at 7am and was still tired so laid back down for about an hour. I got up without incident and went about my day. At about 7pm I went to lay in bed to watch tv and discovered that the one side of the bed was soaked. WTH?! I was sure that snow must have melted and leaked through the ceiling. Nothing. There was no other explanation for this other than I must have lost complete control of my bladder while sleeping, then got up and never had a clue that anything was wrong. This has really scared me because I now see that I had something happen that I have absolutely no recollection of. This REALLY worries me. I'm 59 years old and have never, EVER had an issue with incontinence. Ever.
I really hate that doctors (mine, included) are prescribing this drug without really knowing or caring about the dangers of it. I know we are all responsible for doing our own research but to hear some of these bizarre stories (including mine) - well, it's pretty unsettling. I'm hoping to be off of this drug very soon.

It seems there was a Class Action against the makers of Ambien in 2006. Does anyone know if a new suit is being pursued?
Thanks

My wife became extremely concerned due to my constant sleepwalking. She went as far as to take pictures and record movies of my behavior to prove that this was happening to me.
The night of January 21st 2010 I had taken 1 ambien.
I stayed up for a bit visiting with my ex son-in-law until I became very tired.
The next thing I remember is a year later....
That night I fell down my basement stairs.
I BROKE 7 ribs, shoulder blade, crushed a vertebrae, and BLED four places on my brain creating four hematomas. The fall caused me to seizure. It resulted in death in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. A quarter of my brain is now deteriorated.
I was required to stay in rehabilitation due to the lack of memory abilities and for two weeks of that stay I was required to be restrained so not to create further injury.
I then required full time home care for over 6 months and part time for over a year.
I was forced to retire from my job of 15 years.
I am now diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury and after loosing my PhD abilities and status, I now live with the reality handicap.

7 years after finally getting off the drug which was a nightmare I still suffer hugely from insomnia. The long term effects of memory loss and worsened insomnia make me deeply regret multiple doctors opinion that this is a safe drug. It caused me to long term lose my syarcadian rhythm.
I can relate to those who had accidents or lost their jobs. I feel fortunate but despise the lower quality of life I still lead due to taking this drug.

I began taking Ambien or chronic insomnia about here year ago, an it work as prescribed our until about 14 months ago, at first is was just some silly sleepwalking around my condominium building and some really creative cooking. Then once last year I woke up in an emergency room, very drunk and disorderly which made matters worse because I was then taken to jail. about six months later the same thing, only his time I went out driving, bought liqueur and was the issued a DUI. While at the time I was having some very bad personal issues and the Ambien was not even working any loner, I continued taking it. The latest instance was one month ago, I again left the house in my car, purchased liquor and was pulled over in a vey drunken state. All three incidents I had no idea what happened between the time I laid down and when I woke up in Jail.
I am very troubled by his, while the cost has ruined my savings, put my job at risk, I now have a criminal record after 2 years of spotless behavior. While I do not drink at all, I am being forced to go to alcohol counseling with people I cannot relate to in anyway.
Now that I realized enough is enough, I have thrown all the Ambien away and my Dr is prescribing something else for sleep (sometimes it works). After this I am convinced it was the Ambien,
These people should be sued until they take this poison off the market.

A few times to go off of it. No sleep for two weeks each
Time until I caved in and started back. I sleep eat, wake
Up with wrappers, plates and a mess in the kitchen. I have
Been known many time to shop on line around 2am in the
Morning. I have been caught sleep walking, but responsive.
I have had sex with husband with no memory. I am 50, in the past
Year I have had horrible short term memory loss. It's been
There over the years here and there, but now it's daily. I'm getting quite scared now. It's very embarrassing to be talking to a friend
And totally forget where you were in a story. Or forget watching
A movie from the night before. I'm not sure I can ever get off
Of ambien.

Then 3 weeks ago I saw a stir fry dish on my bed table. One bite had been taken out and the ingredients were odd but, someone has to have used a knife to cut them up and had stir fried them. In kitchen I saw a skillet full of the stir fry. I live alone. Am now trying to cut back on dose of Ambien and hide my purse and keys in a new spot every night. Also I've put up large signs by door and stove to warn myself. Am so afraid of driving car or starting fire in Ambien sleep. Had one other indecent since then.

Ambien was to blame for this accident and it has cost me and my family monentarily and mentally. I would like to instigate a lawsuit against Sanofi-Aventis, the makers of Ambien in hopes of replacing the vehicle which was totaled beyond recognition and pay all my medical bills.
I also would like to campaign that Ambien be removed from the market as it is apparent the drug is deadly.

When I let my doctor know she did immediately prescribed something else. However the pharmacy cannot buy back my remaining doses.
I have also gained 10 pounds. Yikes!
A good nights sleep is not fattening and potentially dangerous.
