Class-action status has been granted in a medical billing lawsuit against health care benefits company Anthem Inc. The two Indiana doctors who have launched the suit are challenging Anthem's practice of sending insurance reimbursement checks to their patients rather than to doctors and other health care providers, if the health care provider isn't on preferred providers' list. In some of these cases, the patients cashed the Anthem checks and didn't pay the doctors for treatments received.

Case Watch

The Indiana Supreme Court reversed the trial court's order certifying the class of physicians affected by Anthem's practices, which class certification order the Court of Appeals had affirmed. There being no appeal from the Supreme Court's order, the case was settled on behalf of the named plaintiffs and dismissed. This was an arduous ten year fight against Anthem, but it is now over.
