The Texas Attorney General filed a lawsuit against the telecommunications company for allegedly overcharging thousands of Texas consumers on their long distance bills. Approximately 75,000 AT&T customers received "monthly recurring fees" of $3.95 on their residential bills. AT&T applied this charge to customers enrolled in its interstate basic rate plan for long distance service. However, AT&T also charged customers who were not required to pay this fee. AT&T has agreed to pay Texas customers an $800,000 settlement. Under the terms of the settlement AT&T will also pay the Attorney General's Office and Public Utility Commission $195,000 each to cover lawyer fees and civil penalties.
