Beryllium
Beryllium is a natural element from the earth that is used in sports equipment, dental work, and ceramics for electronics. Exposure to beryllium can lead to various diseases such as chronic beryllium disease where lung tissue can become scarred.
Workers in certain occupations and industries are most likely to develop the disease. However, victim of secondary exposure and family members can also develop negative side effects from exposure to dust on the worker's clothing, hair or body. Those who work in the atomic energy and defense industries are most at risk, yet other industries also have exposure hazards. Grinders, machinists, hot press operators, welders, and dental technicians are all at risk.
The latency period can be a few months up to forty years. But, once a person has been exposed to beryllium there is a lifelong risk of developing the disease. The symptoms of chronic beryllium disease include, cough, shortness of breath, fever, fatique, night sweats, loss of appetite, and skin rash.
Acute beryllium disease is caused by breathing in relatively high concentrations of beryllium in dust and metal fumes and its symptoms include difficulty breathing cough and chest pain.
