Cargill Beef E. coli Recall
Cargill Meat Solutions is recalling more than 1 milion pounds of ground beef that are suspected of containing E. coli bacteria, after the Agriculture Department found a sample of the meat contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7.
Ten states are involved in the recall: Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
The USDA Food and Safety Inspection Service is working with Cargill to remove the ground beef from store shelves.
A previous recall on Oct-05-07 caused Cargil to remove 840,000 pounds of ground beef patties that had been distributed nationwide through Sam's Club after 8 people developed E. coli illness. The same strain of E. coli is suspected in this latest recall.
Symptoms of E. coli illness are bloody diarrhea and dehydration.
E. coli, which resides in the intestines of cattle, can get onto meat products through improper butchering and processing. Always be careful to thoroughly cook ground beef to at least 160 degrees internal temperature.
