DHA in Spray On Tanning Products Potentially Dangerous
New York, NY: According to an independent review commissioned by CBS.com involving independent medical experts, one of the ingredients in spray on tanning products, dihydroxyacetone (DHA),
could damage human genes, even possibly cause cancer, putting tanning salon employees and their customers at risk for life-threatening adverse health effects.
Six doctors reviewed 10 of the most current, publicly-available scientific studies, and concluded that they "have concerns" regarding the spray on tanning products containing DHA. The studies, none done in humans, showed that DHA alters the genes of different types of organisms and cells. If it' inhaled, entering the lungs and eventually the bloodstream, DHA could create other health problems including cancer, the report, published on CBS.com, states.
The report notes that further research is needed regarding the effect of DHA on humans, including possible birth defects if used by a pregnant woman.
CBS News also found out "that one of the largest manufacturers of spray tan product in the US, Norvell Skin Solutions, has mislabeled DHA as a "food grade" product safe for human consumption that was used by the health supplement industry. While it is true that DHA - docosahexaenoic acid - has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, the DHA used in spray on tans is a completely different product that the FDA warns consumers not to consume or inhale. Norvell has since launched a social media campaign to alert its customers of its mistake.
