LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Elder Abuse
Seniors deserve to be safe from harm, but every year more than 2 million seniors are reported to be victims of physical or psychological abuse and neglect. And millions of more cases probably go unreported.
"Elders who are ill, frail, disabled, mentally impaired, or depressed are at greater risk of abuse, not only in nursing homes, but in their own homes.
Physical abuse can include slapping, shoving, restraining, pinching, burning, biting, beating, rape, over or under medicating, depriving food, or exposing the elder to severe weather.
Emotional abuse ranges from name-calling, ignoring, intimidating, insulting and threatening that causes mental anguish and distress.
Caregiver neglect can include failure to provide food, water, clothing, medications, assistance or help with personal hygiene.
Seniors may also be subjected fo financial exploitation such as failure to pay their bills, or manage their money, embezzlement, fraud, forgery, forced property transfers, improper use of powers of attorney, purchasing items without permission, denying access to the elder's own money and scams involving health services, mortgages and financial managers.
Signs of physical abuse can include bruises around neck or arms, rope marks or welts on wrists or ankles, repeated unexplained injuries, dismissive attitude of staff, sunken eyes, weight loss, extreme thirst, bed sores.
The elder may be uncommunicative, unresponsive, fearful or suspicious, evasiveness.
Signs of sexual abuse can be unexplained vaginal or anal bleeding, bloody underwear, bruised breasts, venereal disease or vaginal infections.
Indications of financial exploitation can be large withdrawals from their bank accounts, change in financial behavior, signatures on checks that don't match the elder's.

Late one evening we were called to the hospital. She was vomiting and screaming in pain. The E.R. administered Demerol. She continued to writhe. 3 hours later Morphine. Then we were told she was dying, the Nursing Home said that she had a Kennedy Terminal Ulcer? and could possibly die within 24 hours to 5 days. SHOCK! She was admitted.
NUMEROUS pressure sores , with large open wounds on buttocks as large as a grapefruit, and one each behind her knees. Later we discovered she had been on a Fentanyl Pain patch for several months previously. She was put on hospice and died 23 days later in the hospital from a U.T.I. and pressure sore wounds. My grandmother died because she had been left alone in her deaf world to suffer needlesly in a Nursing Home. It has turned out to be a nightmare for all of us.
