FDA Issues Warnings Over Mercury Dental Fillings
Some people who have silver-coloured, metal dental fillings that contain mercury may be at risk for health problems. High risk groups include pregnant women, fetuses, and children.
Earlier this week the FDA reached a settlement with consumer advocacy groups in which it has agreed to warn Americans about the risks associated with mercury-containing metal fillings. The adverse health outcomes include neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing fetuses and children, and at certain levels, kidney and brain damage.
The FDA stated that anyone who has a health condition that makes them sensitive to mercury should seek dental care, if they have silver metal fillings, and particularly people with existing high levels of mercury bioburden. This recommendation by the FDA is an about face from its previous stance that there is no good science to show that amalgam fillings are dangerous to people's health.
