Ford Recalls 4.5 Million Vehicles
The largest vehicle recall in Ford's history was issued this week, regarding a potential fire hazard associated with a cruise control activation switch manufactured by Texas Instruments. The recall involves some 4.5 million vehicles. This is the eight such recall involving these switches, bringing the total number of vehicles recalled in recent months to 16 million.
The problem is that the switch can leak hydraulic fluid which can then overheat, generate smoke and burn. The risk for fire exists even if the ignition is off.
The vehicle model/makes are as follows:
Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):
FORD / ECONOLINE : 1992-2003
FORD / EXCURSION : 2000-2003
FORD / EXPLORER : 1995-2002
FORD / F SUPER DUTY : 1993-1997 1999-2003
FORD / F53 : 1994
FORD / RANGER : 1995-1997 2001-2003
FORD / WINDSTAR : 1995-2003
MERCURY / MOUNTAINEER : 1995 2002
According to a report by CNN, the risk for fire is greater in 1.1 million Windstar vehicles. The recall is expected to begin sometime around October 26, 2009. Owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
