Highly Addictive Drugs Available Easily Online

85% of Online Medication Sites do not Require Prescriptions

People who order prescription medications online, can do so without an actual prescription on more than three quarters of pharmacy-type websites, according to a study published July 8. This is particularly problematic because of the ready availability of highly addictive pain medications such as oxycodone, and stimulants.

The fifth annual report of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse noted that of the 365 sites Columbia University researchers found selling controlled substances, 85 percent did not require a physician's prescription. And, while there was a 37 percent drop in the number of sites selling the drugs from 2007, the authors of the report say that's likely due to law enforcement crack downs on online drug trafficking.
