Magnetix Building Set
Magnetix Building Sets have been linked to death and illness in several children who have swallowed the set's small magnetic pieces. While the small pieces are small enough to be choked on by children, these cases have involved damage to the child's small intestine and one case a child died after cardiac arrest.
In another case, a child showed flu-like symptoms after swallowing the toy's magnets. The child's heart stopped and died, the autopsy showed that magnets had connected through the intestinal walls, cutting off blood supply and leading to gangrene.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is currently investigating the Magnetix toy, and some retail stores have pulled the toy from shelves. The CPSC is a federal regulatory agency designed to make sure consumer products are safe. Magnetix Building Sets are manufactured by RoseArt Inc., a subsidiary of MegaBloks and come in 70- and 250-piece sets.
