LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
McDonalds
A $6 million settlement has been reached between McDonalds and members of the vegetarian community.
The lawsuit was filed by the members of the vegetarian community against the fast food giant, claiming that McDonalds deceived consumers in the marketing of their French fries and hash browns by not informing them that they used beef by-products when cooking the potatoe products.
Cook County judge Richard Siebel pronounced the agreement which enabled 24 groups to share in a $10 million settlement. As part of the settlement McDonald's issued an apology and promised to donate $6 million to "vegetarian organizations" that are "dedicat[ed]" to the "values" of "vegetarianism". $3 million additional settlement monies were earmarked for Hindu and Kosher organizations. The members of vegetarian community said that a "vegetarian" is a person who does not eat meat, fish, fowl or any food derived from the flesh of animals. Twenty-three organizations have been awarded $8.6 million. The Attorney representing the vegetarians will receive slightly more than $2 million in fees and costs. [VEG SOURCE]
