Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan wtih PTSD Used in Government Tests of Dangerous Drugs

Drugs Tested Include Chantix

An investigation by ABC news and the Washington Post has revealed that mentally distressed veterans returning from tours of duty in the volatile middle east are being recruited by the government to take part in tests involving dangerous pharmaceutical drugs.

One such study involves the anti-smoking drug Chantix, which is associated with suicidal behavior. In total, approximately 1,000 veterans with PTSD were enrolled in the study to test different methods of ending smoking, with 143 using Chantix. Twenty-one of the veterans testing Chantix reported adverse effects from the drug, including one who suffered suicidal thoughts.

One of the nation's premier medical ethicists said the VA's behavior in the anti-smoking study violated basic protections for humans in medical experiments.
