New Study Links Cell Phone Radiation to Increased Health Risks
A study conducted by the World Health Organization suggests a cell phone cancer risk. Meanwhile, an earlier study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), also suggests that cell phone radiation increases the risk of cancer. Although the link between cell phones and cancer is not conclusive, the World Health Organization has placed cell phones on its list of potential carcinogens.

Cell Phone Radiation: WHO Study
The most recent study was conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), division of the World Health Organization (WHO), which found that people who use cell phones most often, approximately 30 minutes a day for 10 years, had a 40 percent increased risk of a glioma--a rare brain tumor. Furthermore, the WHO examined studies that found acoustic neuroma--another type of cancer--in patient's brains that are most affected by cell phone radiation.
The WHO based its conclusions on published studies that examined the link between cell phone use and cancer. Cell phones are now being added to the list of possible carcinogens.

Cell Phone Radiation: EWG Study
"We would like to be able to say that cell phones are safe," said Olga Naidenko, Ph.D., EWG Senior Scientist and lead author of the study. "But we can't. The most recent science, while not conclusive, raises serious issues about the cancer risk of cell phone use that must be addressed through further research. In the meantime, consumers can take steps to reduce exposure."
As part of their study, the EWG produced a guide that rates the radiofrequency emissions of more than 1000 cell phones marketed within the US, based on manufacturers' technical data. The EWG concluded from their work that "current U.S. cell phone radiation standards, set by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and based largely on 1992 cell phone industry recommendations, are outdated and allow 20 times more radiation to penetrate the head than the rest of the body."
This is particularly dangerous to children, the EWG insists. "The first cell phones were marketed to adults," Naidenko said. "But today, children are just as likely to own a cell phone as a video game, baseball or bicycle." In a recent press release (Sept 10, 2009), the EWG cited data from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, which shows that 71 percent of tweens and teens owned cell phones in 2008. "More than half use the device daily," they reported.
The types of illness cell phone radiofrequency emissions may cause include brain cancer, eye cancer, testicular cancer, salivary gland tumors, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Leukemia.
Recently, Switzerland, Germany, Israel, France, the United Kingdom, and Finland issued warnings regarding the amount of time spent on cell phones, emphasizing that children, who have softer, thinner skulls are at increased risk for brain radiation, and may absorb twice as much radiation from cell phones as adults.
The EWG's study shows the following as the highest radiation-emitting phones:
1. Motorola MOTO VU204 [Verizon Wireless]
2. T-Mobile myTouch 3G [T-Mobile]
3. Kyocera Jax S1300 [Virgin Mobile]
4. Blackberry Curve 8330 [Sprint, U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless, MetroPCS]
5. Motorola W385 [U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless]
6. T-Mobile Shadow [T-Mobile]
7. Motorola C290 [Sprint, Kajeet]
8. Motorola i335 [Sprint]
9. Motorola MOTO VE240 [Cricket, MetroPCS]
10. Blackberry Bold 9000 [AT&T]
