Seniors' Centers Have Dangerous Conditions
Damaged Asbestos-Pipe Insulation Among the Findings
A New York City Comptroller's audit of 20 of the City's 329 seniors' centers has found extremely hazardous conditions present. The findings included pipes protruding from floors, partially blocked exits, poorly lit stairwells and broken handrails. Worse, damaged asbestos-pipe insulation was also discovered. In a story that appeared in the New York Times, Mr. Thompson, the comptroller responsible for the audit accused the Department for the Aging (DFTA) of a lack of follow-up which was putting seniors at risk. Twelve of the 20 centers were found to have serious fire and safety issues. Furthermore, many of the issues discovered were already known to the DFTA and had been cited in its own annual assessments.
Conditions like these are likely not uncommon in seniors' centers across the country, and could pose serious risk for injury and ill health.
