NHTSA to Investigate Late Model Toyota Corollas over Steering Problems

Washington, DC: A formal investigation into complaints of steering problems with the 2009-2010 Toyota Corolla will be undertaken by the US Government, the Washington Post reported today.

So far, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received over 150 complaints from Corolla owners regarding various defects. According to some complaints, some of the steering problems involve the vehicles wandering back and forth at speeds of about 60 miles per hour plus. Apparently the problem stops as quickly as it starts. Wheel vibration and exaggerated motions from small steering inputs have also been reported.

The NHTSA says that 363,000 Corollas from model year 2009 and an additional 136,000 from 2010 could be affected. It plans to investigate about 500,000 late model Corollas.

While no official recall of the 2009/2010 Corollas has been announced by Toyota, it remains a possibility. To date, Toyota recalls involve 7.86 million vehicles worldwide that are affected by unwanted acceleration problems and braking issues.
