New York Police Department
Peter Leslie was forced to retire 4 years short of serving 20 years as a police officer due to health complications exacerbated by smokers. Several fellow cops routinely smoked in his presence even though smoking is banned inside police facilities under New York's no smoking laws.
Leslie was diagnosed with sarcoidosis and filed a lawsuit against the department for allegedly violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. The lawsuit claimed the NYPD was required to accommodate his medical condition. Leslie was awarded $103,000 in back pay and his retirement date was changed to make him eligible for severance pay of $12,000 a year for the rest of his life. (Apr-24-05)
