At the age of 38, Dennis McCaffrey underwent successful spinal surgery at the Maywood facility. Two weeks later he developed severe back pain, a fever, and a spinal abscess. McCaffrey was a postal service employee from Lemont; he became a paraplegic because of the undiagnosed spinal abscess.
