Parsley & Cilantro Recalled in US and Canada

Edinburg, TX: Following confirmation from regulators of a positive test for salmonella on curly parsley in Quebec and cilantro in Detroit, J&D Produce Inc. is initiating a precautionary, voluntary recall of these two items packed only Nov. 30 and Dec. 6, 2010. There have been no reported illnesses.

The recall involves 2,498 cases of the parsley with expiration dates 12 days after being packed. The parsley went out to the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario and the U.S. states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.

The 4,411 recalled cases of cilantro, carrying the same packing and expiration dates as the parsley, were distributed in Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin as well as Quebec and Ontario.

The commodities have "pack dates" of either Nov. 30, 2010, or December 6, 2010 and from experience these types of greens are sold, purchased by the consumer and/or eaten within about fourteen days from "pack dates"; however, if any consumer has any of these items in his or her possession the commodity(s) should be destroyed or returned to the store where purchased for a full refund.

The commodities are packed in red, white, and blue waxed cartons under the Little Bear brand. The individual bunches are banded using a rubber band or a twist tie identified by a flag tag that shows a little bear with a cowboy hat, a red handkerchief and a Texas flag. Ottawa, Ont: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume certain Little Bear brand fresh greens listed below because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The following products are being recalled by J & D Produce Inc., in Canada.

Arugula
Beets
Cilantro
Collards
Curly Parsley
Curly Mustard
Diakon
Dill
Green Swisschard
Kale
Kohlrabi
Methi (fenugreek) leaf
Plain Parsley
Red Swisschard.

These fresh greens were sold in bunches tied with a Little Bear band. These products were shipped to Canada from November 30 to December 7, 2010, and sold by various grocery stores thereafter. These products may have been distributed nationally.

Individual bunches do not have a date on the bands. Consumers who may have purchased these fresh greens and are not sure of the dates or brands are advised to contact the place of purchase to see if they have the affected product(s).
