Remicade
Reports of Neurological Side Effects
Remicade (Infliximab) is an immune-suppressing drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. It is manufactured by Centocor and distributed by Johnson & Johnson. Reports of adverse side effects have prompted the maker to issue warnings to healthcare providers citing reports of CNS (central nervous system) disorders and hematologic events. The warning issued by Centocor states, "Cases of leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and pancytopenia, some with a fatal outcome, have been reported in patients taking Remicade.""Discontinuation of Remicade therapy should be considered in patients who develop significant hematologic abnormalities."
In October, 2001 Centocor issued a "black box warning" to healthcare professionals noting that, "tuberculosis and other serious opportunistic infections, including histoplasmosis, listeriosis, and pneumocystosis, have been reported in both the clinical research and post marketing surveillance settings."
