Maricopa County, AZ: (Jun-20-07) The family of Clint Yarbrough filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Maricopa County after Yarbrough died in Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jail. Yarbrough was brought into the Fourth Avenue jail in December 2005, where sources say he appeared drugged and became combative. He was put in a restraint chair and wheeled to a hallway where he sat for more than three hours, eventually passing out. He was transported to a local hospital where he died, leading the family to file claims against the county and the sheriff's department.
In a settlement reached, the county board of supervisors agreed to resolve the claim for $2 million. In August 2006, Arpaio announced he was no longer using the highly controversial restraint chairs. Instead, detention officers now use what is called a safe bed. [KTAR NEWS: RESTRAINT CHAIR DEATH]
