Cellcept, Myfortic can lead to Miscarriages, Birth Defects
The Food and Drug Administration has warned that Roche and Novartis may lead to miscarriages or birth defects when used by pregnant women. The drugs are commonly used for organ transplant patients, and the FDA has received reports of these health risks, prompting the warning. The immune suppression drugs, Roche's CellCept, and Novartis AG drug Myfortic, are used to avoid organ rejection, and last October received the FDA's most serious warning. The FDA will continue to work with the drugs' manufacturers to curb its use in women who are pregnant, or might become pregnant.
