Salmonella From Chicken Entrees Affects People in 12 States

Microwaving Part of the Problem

Frozen chicken dinners that are insufficiently cooked have made 32 people ill in 12 states. The government is warning consumers to thoroughly cook the frozen chicken dinners before eating them.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, frozen dishes that contain raw chicken but are breaded or pre-browned are deceiving because people think the dish is pre-cooked. Many people have become ill because they are microwaving the product, despite the fact that the labeling does not carry instructions for microwaving, which doesn't heat the meals sufficiently to kill the salmonella.

The affected dishes include raw, frozen, breaded and pre-browned, stuffed chicken entrees, such as chicken cordon bleu, chicken Kiev, or chicken breasts stuffed with cheese, vegetables or other items.
