Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Turkey Products Kills 1, Sickens 76

Washington, DC: The federal government is working to identify the source of a salmonella outbreak that has so far killed one person in Sacramento and sickend a further 76 in 26 states. The salmonella outbreak has been linked to ground turkey meat. The Salmonella Heidelberg strand was identified in three of the four ground turkey samples purchased between March 7 and June 27, MSNBC.com reports.

Three of the four products reportedly originated from the same facility, but the precise cause remains unknown. The highest number of reported cases of salmonella poisoning associated with this outbreak have been in Michigan, Texas, Ohio and California.

Von Roebuck, who is with the CDC, told MSNBC that, while he couldn't speak to this specific incidence, the delay in public attention could be due to the sporadic nature of the bacteria. "It takes a while for people to become ill and to track those illnesses," he said. The CDC states that symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever and abdonimal cramps usually beginning 12 to 72 hours after infection.
