Pet Owners Report Severe Adverse Reactions with Sergeant's Flea & Tick Treatment
Rochester, MN: Two families in Minnesota have reported that their pets have suffered severe adverse health reactions which they believe are linked to Sergeant's over-the-counter flea and tick treatments.
One couple had applied Sergeant's Flea and Tick gel onto their dog's back and he subsequently developed breathing difficulties, red skin and red ears. The Hoops family thought their dog was dying. "He was throwing up, foaming at the mouth, and losing his movement in his back legs for 30 seconds to a minute at a time," John Hoops told ABC6News.
These latest health concerns follow earlier pet health issues reported with the use of Hartz Mountain and Summit VetPharm and allegations that t the flea or tick treatments made by these two companies contained Pyrethrin, or a synthetic version of the chemical Pyrethroids, which are "known to poison animals." Several lawsuits were filed, naming Hartz Ultra Guard flea and tick drops and Summit VetPharm's Vectra 3d as products that caused serious, if not fatal harm to people's pets.
In one lawsuit, a man from California saw his Scottish Terrier, Duffy, die three days after he treated him with Hartz flea and tick drops. Rick Parsons took Duffy to the veterinarian's facility because he did not appear well. Duffy died at the Vet's office that day and the Vet reportedly said the death was due to a "reaction to the insecticide."
