Students Win $11.2M Settlement in Chicago School of Psychology Fraud Lawsuit

This is a settlement for the lawsuit.

Santa Clara, CA:A $11.2 million settlement in a consumer fraud class action lawsuit pending against The Chicago School of Psychology has received final approval. The lawsuit was brought by students who alleged they were provided with misleading information regarding the school’s accreditation and their job prospects after completing their courses.

The settlement will provide financial recovery for 87 students who are class members. The average payout will be $95,000 per student.

Plaintiff Miranda Joe Truitt and other students filed the complaint in November, 2012 claiming they invested in a worthless education. They wanted to study at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and were encouraged to attend classes at the graduate university’s Los Angeles campus, which was falsely promoted to them as being prestigious and accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

According to the settlement documents, the plaintiffs were “either negligently lured” to enroll at the Los Angeles campus or were caused to stay “by a series of statements or omissions allegedly made, issued or approved by defendants.” In 2013, Tara Fischer filed a similar class action which was later consolidated with the Truitt’s complaint.

According to Truitt’s complaint, the administration of the Chicago School of Psychology led the Los Angeles campus students to believe that they would get APA approval before their graduation.

The case is Miranda Jo Truit et al v. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, number BC495518, in the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles.

I enrolled at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2016 and have been working to finish my Dissteration. I was sick and couldn’t attend classes but I worked on my Dissteration since it was on line. I had 3 chairs two of which left me hanging and the third chair tried for a while but he left my Dissteration on the portal for over 2 years. I’m still struggling to get the edits like IRB wants them but the ting of it is the IRB committee don’t commit to reading the corrections. I’ve had the same corrections come back several times and I do the changes as suggested but they come back. I complained to several administrators but it didn’t work so I wrote to Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education and they said that I would get my approval so they denied my claim. I’m looking for legal representation. This school has charged me over 150,000. For a Dr degree I don’t have and can’t get a job.

This is in response to David C.'s comment that "The faculty spent much of their careers inflating their resumes at prisons and correctional facilities." Where is your proof? Your statements are made invalid when you unnecessarily exaggerate. From my point of view, the school's reputation varies by location. The DC location is outstanding.

I am enrolled at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, when I enrolled they university promised me it will graduate.my practicum time and the internship that I can't graduate with my PhD. without completing both. However here l am close to finishing all required courses but I have not have any of the work if practicum or Internship done. The university is only hooks us with links of psychology institutions and we are on our own in the hiring process, getting to finish the required practice hours to graduate seems impossible because I don't have any offers due to my background working experience a d my age. The university lied and misled me and other students with this part of the learning process and graduation is not grantee. I like to explore my options.

Hi Carol I saw you have posted some about your bad experiences at the Chicago school, even though we are at 2021, but the university still misleading the students. I am attending the University in the PsyD program and I can't get to do my practicum, when I apply to the university they promised me I will not have any problems to find available spot because the university will guarantee that, I can't graduate because I can't get into practicum. However, even it is almost 5 years after your post but if you still feel you want to take an action against the Chicago University, let me know or anyone like to join me with a legal action aginst the Chicago University please contact me.

I'm glad they won too. This organization is run by a bunch of thugs. It is run by venture capitalists and private equity firms who seek nothing but ROE. Even with ties to the Middle East and Saudi Arabia. Many of The faculty spent much of their careers inflating their resumes at prisons and correctional facilies. This place is bad news.

I went to school at the Chicago School for a couple of semesters (PsyD program at the Irvine Campus). It does not make me happy to say this, but it is important. I would not recommend this school to anyone.
