Study Shows Potential Link Between Hair Relaxers and Fibroids

Washington DC: According to a new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, Black American women who use hair relaxers may be at increased risk for developing uterine fibroids and for early puberty.

Specifically, the study, which followed 23,000 pre-menopausal Black American women from 1997 to 2009, found a two-to-three-times higher rate of fibroids among the women who suffered chemical exposure resulting from scalp lesions and burns caused by the hair relaxing products.

Last year, a study published in the Annals of Epidemiology, found that women who had their first menstrual period before the age of 10 were also more likely to have uterine fibroids. Early menstruation may result from hair products black girls are using, according to the study.

While this latest study does not provide evidence of a clear link—a cause and effect relationship—between fibroids and hair relaxers, experts note that the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the hair care industry which means there is no way to know for certain exactly how harmful hair care products for Black Americans may be.
