Antibiotic Tequin (gatifloxacin) alleged to cause Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia
Health authorities at the FDA recently announced several consumer reports linking severe cases of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia to antibiotic Tequin. Some of these consumer cases were fatal.
Tequin (gatifloxacin) is in a class of antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and sexually-transmitted disease, gonorrhea. Bristol-Myers Squibb launched Tequin in 1999. With recent FDA prompting, Bristol has revised the antibiotic drug's label to indicate an increased risk of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
Patients that have a history of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, hyperglycemia or high blood sugar, diabetes or related health problems should take caution of this drug and inform their doctor of their medical history.
General side effects of Tequin include liver damage, muscle pain, fainting, irregular heartbeats, dizziness, and nausea. As with many drugs, the risk of an allergic reaction can be fatal.
