Tomato Growers Want Compensation for Losses
Growers Want Warnings Lifted
It is estimated that tomato growers have lost over $100 million as a result of the multi-state warnings of salmonella- tainted tomatoes. However, a link has yet to be established between the food source and the bacterial outbreak. Tomato growers are angry and want federal compensation for their losses, as well as the FDA to rescind the health alert concerning certain types of tomatoes.Last week, industry officials from two of the largest tomato-growing states--Florida and California--began talks with members of Congress concerning possible legislation to compensate growers for their losses.
