Toxic Metals Found in Herbal Medicines

Herbal Remedies Sold Through Websites

Dangerous levels of lead and other toxic metals have been found in traditional Indian medicines sold on the Internet and used worldwide, according to a study from the Boston University School of Medicine.

Dr. Robert B. Saper and his team randomly sampled 193 Ayuvedic medicines ordered through online sites, and analyized them for metal concentrations. They found that one-fifth of the samples contained lead, mercury and arsenic, all toxic, and all potentially dangerous to humans. Approximately 21 pecent of the samples containing toxic metals had levels of lead or mercury that were 100 to 10,000 times the acceptable limits. Ninety-five percent of the products were sold by US based Web sites.
