Toyota Announces Recall of 345,000 Sienna Mini Vans due to Seat Belt Problems

On July 21st, 2005, Toyota Motor Corp. announced this it recalling 345,000 Sienna Mini Vans because of reports that the seat belt may not properly retract after unbuckling. Specifically, the company states that the shoulder portion of the seat belt in the middle row may become stuck in a plastic piece the belt should slide through easily. This may cause the belt to bunch or bind up making it difficult to remove or put on.

This poses a risk to passengers, especially in the event where the occupant needs to exit the vehicle quickly, such as a fire following an collision or driving into a canal or stream, just to name a few.

This voluntary recall involves Sienna's from the 2004 and 2005 model years. While Toyota states they have received 14 reports of this problem, they are aware of none that resulted in injuries.

The problem allegedly affects the right side chair in the middle row of the seven-passenger model and the center seating position in the second bench seat in eight-passenger models.

Toyota states that they will begin contacting Sienna owners beginning in Mid-August 2005. All customers will be instructed to contact their local Toyota dealer to replace the piece, called a bezel, at no cost to the customer.

I purchased a Toyota Sienna in 2012 and weeks after I was cleaning under the seats and saw major rust under all of the seats. My power doors were and still are malfunctioning. The sensor doors does not work properly and closes shot. It closed on my hand, my children several times. While driving I would loose power of my doors and everything else. I took the van back to the service for these problem 7 times and I was told that the rust is normal and that the power doors problem could not be duplicated. I filled a claim with the corporate and they took the dealer's side. A manager at the Toyota Corporate named Autumn, denied all my complains and was rude beyond words.

Has these things happen to anyone else that owns a Sienna ? i don't know what else to do. if someone has any suggestion please let me know !

My 2004 Sienna began having a issue with the front driver side seat belt at 48,000 miles. It would twist and not retract. Finally, after years of dealership unable to fix/adjust it became completely unretractable. I had to pay to get a new seat belt installed $418 with labor.

WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH BOTH OF OUR FRONT SEAT BELLS OF OUR 2005 SIENNA VAN. WE RECEIVED A SIMILAR LETTER WHICH I LOST UNFORTUNATELY. IT DIDNOT STATE WHICH BELT. I CALLED THE DEALER THEY SAID THAT THERE ARE NO RECALL.
I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS AT ALL. I THINK TOYOTA SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM.

We own a 2007 Toyota Sienna manufactured 07/2007. It has 86500 miles on it. The drivers safety belt randomly fails to retract into the side wall of the van. This renders the seat belt useless until it can be unstuck and forced back into the take up reel. This can be any where from easy to very difficult. I researched recalls and the 2003-2006 Sienna have an applicable Warranty Enhancement Program into June 30th,
2018 which will assist owners with replacement of the defective safety belt assembly. However ours is not covered by this Warranty Extension yet it has the problem. I filed a safety complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). They gave me a Complaint# and Reference#. Ain't that great. Then I filed a complaint with Toyota Motors Sales USA.
Torrance, CA. I was assigned a case # by Toyota. When it came time to pay the bill for the seat belt repair the Wilson Toyota service manager and the Regional Service Manager said they would not provide financial assistance for this. Mainly because I was not a loyal service customer of the the Wilson Toyota Dealership. I had only been there for the other recalls.
Just another case of dollars vs lives.

My 2005 driver side seat belt does not retract and can't be used. I received a recall notice that did not specify which belts were recalled. I can not find the notice that was sent and the local toyota dealer knows nothing about it. I did find on the web that there is a recall for the center passenger seat belt, however again the local dealer did not mention this.

What will Toyota do about this?

I have Toyota Sienna 2004. All suddenly my driver side seatbelt got twisted (slightly folded on one side in the plastic bezel) and can not retract back. I know Sienna had some recalls on seatbelt but not on the driver side.
What are my rights? I think this is Toyota responsibility.
This have happened yesterday and I am driving with completely loose seatbelt around me.
I am very careful with my car.
I am not happy about it and pay big $.

my 2005 Toyota sienna van has had issues with the front passenger side safety belt. I don't exactly remember when the issue started. But I now have my son driving this van. I have read many reviews about this same issue happening in other 2005 sienna vans. The safety belt will not retract and gets stuck. My dealership said this is a $500 fix. ouch. When there is a known issue. Shouldn't this be the dealers responsibility?

Please let me know if Toyota is willing to stand behind this fix and cover the cost of replacing this safety belt.

Yes, my van is 10 years old. I have taken excellent care of this van. Now, with my son driving this vehicle, I want him and his friends safe. Of course I will get this fixed. But I do believe Toyota has a responsibility here.

And I am in the market for a new Vehicle.
