Vapotherm 2000i and 2000h Humidifier Recall
The FDA has announced a recall of Vapotherm's popular 2000i and 2000h Respiratory Gas Humidifiers due to bacteria contaminations that can lead to serious illness or death.
Authorities have received numerous reports of Vapotherm humidifiers/ oxygen masks containing bacteria such as Ralstonia. Patients who are exposed to this bacteria can develop deadly infections such as tracheitis, sepsis, and pneumonia. Since the Vapotherm humidifiers are used by patients with respiratory problems such as chronic lung and acute breathing disorders, this air-borne bacteria can worsen patient's respiratory health.
Vapotherm's humidifiers deliver oxygen through face mask or nasal tubes and are very popular in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and in-home health care. These oxygen-delivering devices are used on everyone from infants to elderly patients who may suffer from chronic lung diseases, severe asthma, laryngitis, croup, sinusitis/rhinitis, cystic fibrosis, tracheostomy care, hypothermia, wound healing, etc.
Patients who have been using a Vapotherm system, whether at home or in a hospital setting, should be monitored for signs of infection. Even without these additional problems, patients with chronic lower respiratory diseases account for more than 100,000 U.S. deaths each year.
The FDA issues a Public Health Alert on Vapotherm Respiratory devices and information on bacteria Ralstonia spp. (Dec-20-05) [FDA]
