LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and The Wackenhut Corp.
On January 19, 2005 19-year-old Megan LeAnn Holden was working the night shift at Wal-Mart Super Center in Tyler, TX. Holden was kidnapped from the store parking lot, raped and then killed. Her body was found on the side of a highway in West Texas, about 400 miles from her home. Johnny Lee Williams Jr. pleaded guilty to capital murder, saying he kidnapped, raped, strangled and shot Holden. He was sentenced to five concurrent life sentences. Holden's parents filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart and Wackenhut claiming their negligence resulted in their daughter's death. They claimed Wal-Mart did not take reasonable security precautions in failing to remove Williams from the property or come to their daughter's aid. An attorney for Wal-Mart confirmed the case had been settled but said he could not comment on the details. According to court records, The Wackenhut Corp. settled for $1.3 million. (Aug-29-06)
